Joey Jacques

Earl Case

Craig Kramer

Joey has over 43 years of experience teaching SCUBA, beginning in 1968,  and has been diving for 54 years. He is a platinum certified diver, with only a few hundred other divers including Jacques Cousteau, having over 5000 SCUBA dives. If you can name a dive location in the United States or throughout the World, Joey probably has been there. From ice diving to toasty Caribbean fun, Search and Recovery to underwater photography, Joey has done it. Some of his favorite sites include Palau, Egypt and the Red Sea, Bonaire, and the Galapagos Islands. He is currently an SSI instructor and instructor evaluator and holds certifications from NAUI, NASDS, PADI, YMCA, and BSAC. Specialty course certified in: Navigation, Low Visibility & Night Diving, Equipment, Boat Diving, Digital Photography, Deep diving, computer diving, Stress and rescue, Search and Recovery, Nitrox, Wreck Diving, and Dry Suit diving.

Brief philosophy of diving instruction: SCUBA lessons should be fun and instrumental in creating a competent, confident diver, that can enjoy the beauty and mysteries of our underwater world.

Favorite Dive site: In fresh water, Tobermory Canada in Lake Huron has to be on the top of the list. It has old ship wrecks that are exceptionally well preserved due to the low amount of oxygen and very cold water. In saltwater, Egypt's Red Sea is my favorite. Locally, Gilboa Quarry is a favorite.

Favorite Specialties: Underwater Photography.

Favorite Trips: Bonaire, Cozumel, Rotan Honduras, Palau figi, Red Sea, Thailand.

Why Dive? I love the feeling of weightlessness and exploring the underwater world.

Why dive with COSD: The people here have year's of experience and knowledge about the sea and where to go to get great diving and fun.

Dive certifications: OW diver, AOWD, Instructor certifications: NASDS AOWI, PADI OWI, SSI AOWI and specialty Instructor

Specialty Instructor, SSI AOWI Certified for Navigation, Low Visibility & Night Diving, Equipment, Boat Diving, Digital Photography

Brief philosophy of diving instruction: I want students to develop a love of the underwater world using SCUBA and to enjoy exploring it. They should do it in a fun, safe, and comfortable manner. I want each student to feel confident about their understanding of SCUBA and the skills they develop with the aid of their buddy.

Favorite dive site: Freshwater is Crystal River, Florida where the springs are fascinating to dive in and the manatee are friendly. Saltwater (near the Eastern U.S.):It has to be Bonaire which has some of the world's most pristine coral reefs with very warm azure clear water year round. It is doubtful that you will see more fish anywhere else. While the Bahamas and Grand Cayman are exciting especially Sting Ray City on Grand Cayman, the Florida Keys still have excellent reef inhabited by an extraordinary number of fish (although the weather can just be touchy).

Favorite local dive site: Circleville Twin Quarries because the facility is quite nice and it is diver friendly and is usually quite warm in late summer to early fall so you can wear a 2-3 mm wetsuit and feel like you are diving in Florida or the Caribbean. It is a great location to practice navigation plus the summer freshwater jellyfish are awesome.

Favorite specialty (ies)

Night Diving- either freshwater or ocean.

Favorite trip (s): Crystal River, Florida for spring diving and observing Manatees.

Why dive?: Where else can you spend one to two hours immersed in a water environment where you experience what it is like to be weightless and fly among geologic formations, plants, and animals that you do not encounter in your normal daily life. The coral reefs are like the eighth Wonders of the World where fish are so numerous they are hard to count, the colors so vivid that sometimes you wonder if they are real, and the corals and sponges are so fascinating with their infinite geometric patterns and shapes. When you take the plunge, the warm waters envelop you and the underwater sounds are so foreign and different to our brain. We are visitors into nature, even if for only a brief while, penetrating into another’s home, where without our life support (SCUBA) we could not survive. If you don’t come back to the surface with a wonder of nature, an awe of the majesty below the surface, and a feeling of the complexity of the enormous diversity of life, then you truly have missed something.

Why dive with COSD?: The instructors at COSD have diverse backgrounds with a large amount of workshop, professional, and educational training. We have the most experienced instructor staff in central Ohio who are experienced and proficient in working with young children through mature adults.
